If you have dentures, it’s expected that you will wear them most of the day, then, in most cases, take them out for sleeping. Wearing your dentures all day should be comfortable, and it should foster oral and general health.

But many people just don’t wear their dentures very much at all. They may put them in for going out (though they often take them out again for eating!) or when someone comes to the house, but otherwise their dentures sit on the table or in their container.

When you buy a set of dentures, you should be able to use them. Unfortunately, there are many reasons why people just don’t wear their dentures most of the time.

Discomfort

Probably the biggest issue that keeps people wearing their dentures is denture pain. If your dentures don’t fit properly, they can cause gum soreness and irritation. This can also happen if your dentures are old and worn.

Even worse, some dentures can cause jaw pain, headaches, and other TMJ symptoms because they don’t support proper jaw position.

Looseness

Some people don’t put their dentures in because they just fall out again. If you have loose dentures, you don’t want them to drop out when you laugh, sneeze, or just talk loud, especially if you’ve had a pair fall and break before.

Instead, you might want to keep your dentures safe most of the time by keeping them put away and only bringing them out when necessary.

Interference

Dentures are supposed to do all the things your teeth did. This means that they have to play a role in eating, talking, smiling, and everything else your teeth do. But some dentures are so poorly made or so badly fitted that they actually make it harder to do these things. It always makes us sad to see or hear that people remove their dentures to eat–your dentures should help you to eat!

Unattractiveness

We mentioned that your dentures are supposed to help you smile. They only do that by looking attractive. But some dentures are so unattractive and fake that people would rather not wear them most of the time.

This can go beyond just not wanting to show them when you smile. Your dentures provide support for the lower third of your face, and if they’re not properly fitted, it can affect your facial appearance even when your lips are closed. Not wearing your dentures can contribute to a shrinking face after tooth loss.

Dentures You Will Wear

In the past, people may have accepted these limitations of dentures, but today there’s no reason to live with dentures that you just can’t or won’t wear most of the time. Modern techniques such as the Denture Fountain of Youth ® and the BPS approach allow us to make dentures that are more comfortable and more attractive than in the past. We can also use dental implants to secure your dentures, making them more more functional and supportive.
